CTV buyers are being asked to hand more campaign control to systems that choose inventory, apply data, measure outcomes and set prices inside the same environment. That can be convenient. It also creates a basic governance question: whose interests does the system optimize when the buyer’s outcome and the platform’s economics diverge?
The cost of not knowing
This is bigger than one platform or one fee. It is the cumulative effect of transaction costs, data charges, measurement markups, service fees and inefficient supply paths. An Association of National Advertisers study of programmatic buying on the open web found that just 36% of each dollar effectively reached the consumer. Transaction costs accounted for 29%, while 35% was lost to productivity issues that included low quality media.
That research was not limited to CTV, and no two campaigns have identical economics. But the lesson applies: buyers cannot improve what they cannot see.
Automation needs accountability
Automated buying is a tool, not a strategy. Problems can begin when a platform owns the buying system, the optimization logic, the inventory choices and the measurement. If buyers cannot independently inspect those decisions, efficiency can quietly become dependency.
Control shouldn’t come at the expense of transparency.
Wavefront works with the tools agencies and brands already use. We provide what opaque systems often remove: visible paths, understandable pricing, senior human judgment and direct accountability.
Five questions every CTV buyer should ask
- What exactly am I buying? Ask for the inventory source, seller and environment. A package name is not enough.
- How much of my budget reaches media? Request a clear explanation of platform, data, measurement and service costs.
- Who benefits from each optimization decision? Understand whether the system is acting as your agent, selling as a principal or doing both.
- Can I verify the outcome? Align on attribution definitions, reporting access and limitations before launch.
- Who is accountable? Make sure an experienced person can investigate anomalies and act quickly.
A better path is possible
Agencies and brands can reach premium CTV audiences at scale without accepting layers they do not understand. Wavefront provides direct access, transparent economics and personal support while conforming to the buyer’s preferred workflow.
Our position is simple: know what you bought, know where it ran and know what it cost. Technology should serve that standard. It should never replace it.
